The annual bass tournament at the Hartley Farm was a big success with the weather being perfect! Winners were: biggest bass, Ferrell Festervand, first place; Fletcher Moorman, second place; Ferrell Festervand, third place; Bailey Sossaman, fourth place; and Todd Carrapman, fifth place. Biggest Crappie, Mike Poynor had the biggest crappie and William and Alex Davis the biggest stringer. Faye said it was a beautiful day and she was so thankful for all those who helped get everything together and cooked. Without them it would be impossible. A wonderful time was had by all.
My dear friend, Susan Traywick Bell of Caledonia, came Saturday and spent the night. She left Sunday afternoon going back home. She and Donna finished the dinner that I had started and cleaned my kitchen.
Another sweet longtime friend, Liz McKinney, visited Monday morning. Liz had been to a sleep study at Batesville.
Love and sympathy to the Linda Elizabeth Weir Smith family of Holcomb. Linda passed away Saturday, May 4, at her residence. She was born Aug. 13, 1947, in Grenada to Louis Trout Sr. and Clarice Fite Weir. Linda was my sister Joyce Weir’s sister-in-law. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Larry Smith; daughter, Shelley Smith of Savannah, Georgia; two sons, Larry Weir Smith (Stephanie) of Grenada and Robert Smith (Scarlett) of Holcomb; and several grandchildren.
Also, love and sympathy to the Deborah Sanders family of Enid. Deborah had a knee replacement and never really got over it and when she had the second one, she fell and broke her leg and went downhill after that. They put her in ICU and vented her and everything started shutting down. She had a blood clot in her lungs. I worked with this precious lady at the Griffis All American Restaurant here in Tillatoba and she was a joy to work with. Always smiling and such a happy person. The angels are going to love this sweet lady.
Gloria Marceleno visited her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Jessie Little, in Richmond, Virginia, last week. I think she was impressed with all the art museums there.
Phil and Ginger Harrison had a great weekend. They missed Jake, as he is preparing for exams. They said Pine Grove homecoming was fantastic and that Brother Truman Scarborough gave the truth in his sweet message. It was a very good sermon. There was special music by James Caulder, Diane Hill, Wanda Kirk, Becky Simpson and a song from Josh Harrison. He did a great job singing and playing “Welcome Table.” It was a blessed day.
It was such a great weekend for Jesse Anna Robinson, daughter of David and Mindy Robinson. Jesse Anna received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. I know she is one happy young lady. Tillatoba is so proud of you, Jesse!
Sheryn Goode went to Bartlett, Tennessee, to visit with her daughter, Dana Huffman, who had hip replacement surgery again. The first one they put in two years ago was defective from the factory. She also went to Byhalia, Mississippi, to her great-grandson’s birthday party. While there, she got to spend time with her other daughter, Sonja Mercer, and her two granddaughters and great-granddaughter.
My better half motored to Madison last week to watch grandson Mills Deck play ball. I was sick and couldn’t go. Mills is the son of Logan and Brandy Deck. (David wants to thank Jason Beavers for coming to his rescue and helping him fix his Bush Hog.)
Barbara Parker came and visited with her sister, Diane Dukes, and they all had a good visit. Barbara was here about a week. All of Diane’s kids love their aunt Barbara Ellen. On Thursday, Diane and Junior Dukes, who is Joanna Pullen’s uncle, took her to dance lessons and they had the recital Saturday in Oxford. Diane said all of the children did really good.
Diane Dukes was telling me that she, along with daughter-in-law Kathy Dukes, granddaughter Roseann Dukes Rose, and friend Nancy Chambers went on a cruise in March for spring break. Everyone had a good time. Diane and Kathy are booking another cruise for the same time next spring break. She said they met a lot of interesting people and everybody was so happy and nice. Diane said when they got back to the states, they look like Beverly Hillbillies coming home.
Happy birthday to Layla Tillman, who celebrated her 18th birthday Sunday, May 5; to Sheila Bailey and Josh Harrison, who celebrate the 10th; to Freddy Wayne McClanahan, who celebrates the 11th; to Shannon Dukes on the 12th; to Gale Ward Holliday, Gene Standridge and Kelly Walton Cassatta on the 13th; and to JoJo McClanahan and Teresa Jackson on the 15th. I pray you all have a great day of celebrating!
We are gonna find out about Martha Box in next week’s news. She landed in Texas, I think!
Recipe for the week: Caramel Pie (my favorite!)
1½ cups sugar
1½ cup milk
3 egg yolks. Save whites for top of pie.
3 tablespoons flour
1 stick oleo
1 teaspoon vanilla
Combine one cup of sugar, flour and eggs. Add milk and oleo. Cook until it begins to thicken. While you’re cooking the first mixture, brown ½ cup sugar and pour into first mixture and cook a few minutes longer. Let cool and pour into your cooked crust. Add beaten egg whites to top of pie and slightly brown.
Thought for the day: Speak when your words are more beautiful than silence.
