Remember those Saturday nights at the Charleston Fairgrounds as a kid? Your parents would park, and you would walk what seemed like a mile to the carnival. You would buy tickets for a few rides, throw darts at balloons, walk through the Ladies’ Building to admire their quilts, and always, always, stop by the Lions Club’s booth on the way home for their famous hamburgers.
Well, I do not want to even pretend that an event today would compare to those childhood memories. However, on Saturday, June 18, CARE will partner with the Fairgrounds Committee and the Ed & Becky Meek Foundation to present Rockin’ at the Fairgrounds, an evening of music at the Tallahatchie County Fairgrounds east of Charleston.
Music will begin at 8 that evening and will be provided by S.L.A.S.H. If you have not had a chance to hear this band, they are a great local band that plays all genres of music from rock to Southern country favorites. Led by front man Joseph Lindley, Roger Albritton on bass, Kelvin Simmons on guitar and with Steve Simmons keeping the beat going on drums, S.L.A.S.H. always provides a great show. They provided our musical entertainment the evening before our Gateway to the Delta Festival last year.
Local artist Joe Kendall and his band will take the stage next and also guarantee a great show filled with country classics and rock anthems. Joe shared that they will even play some bluesy numbers, so there will be music that everyone will enjoy. Joined on stage Saturday night by Rex Bright, Mike Brown and Gene Carlisle, Kendall, who normally wears his trademark white cowboy hat, has performed numerous times at the CARE Gateway to the Delta Festival and other local events.
Cost for entry is $10 per person ($5 for kids 12 and under) and $10 per cooler and will be paid at the entry gate. Crews will assist with directing attendees to their parking spots.
The Fairgrounds Committee, E&BMF and CARE want to provide a night of fun, safe entertainment for our community.
If the event is a success, more nights at the Charleston Fairgrounds will be planned later in the year.
