SUMNER – The Emmett Till Interpretive Center (ETIC) invites all residents of Tallahatchie County to attend a town hall meeting on May 25 at 6 p.m. at the Sumner courthouse. The meeting is to invite community input on planning an Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley memorial at the river site where Emmett’s body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River.
This town hall will kick off a series of in-depth community conversations slated to begin June 8 and to conclude in October. The conversations will engage community members in a collaborative process to create the river site memorial and to address other community concerns that are raised during these sessions.
The town hall meeting and community conversations will be facilitated by Susan Glisson and Charles Tucker of Sustainable Equity.
“Community input and engagement is of the utmost importance when it comes to racial reconciliation,” said Benjamin Saulsberry, ETIC museum director. “The Emmett Till Memorial Commission expressed its commitment to the creation of racial harmony in Tallahatchie County many years ago and we believe that processes like these exhibit the unyielding resolve towards realizing our better selves; one day and one conversation at a time. We look forward to hearing the thoughts, concerns and hopes of our community.”
This town hall will also be streamed on the Emmett Till Interpretive Center Facebook page and can be viewed at www.facebook.com/tillcenter.
