A much anticipated time during the Gateway to the Delta Festival is the presentation of several awards, and that remained true for the 13th Gateway on Oct. 12, 2024.
First to be honored, Saturday morning, was this year’s winner of the CAREing Heart Award: former longtime local pharmacist and now CEO of The Diabetic Shoppe, Robert L. Salmon.
Lisa Wolfe was honored as the recipient of the CARE Volunteer of the Year Award.
Mac Venable, known by many as a former longtime guidance counselor at Charleston High School, was presented with the Hometown Hero Award.
Salmon, Wolfe and Venable exemplify the qualities which each of these awards is designed to recognize, making them very worthy recipients.
Pam Pipkin was honored as the winner of the Gateway to the Delta Photo Contest.
Local Farm Service Agency Executive Director David Groner was the “Smoochin’ Scissors” contest winner and got to plant a kiss on the snout of a 6-month-old pig. Tell us he did not feel special.
Over the years, the Gateway awards have honored many wonderful people, some of whom are no longer with us. Yet, we suspect that the good deeds which earned them their award in the first place, continue to live on in the hearts and minds of many and serve as an inspiration to others.
