The Charleston High School girls and boys powerlifting teams finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in Class 2A competition at the Mississippi High School Activities Association Powerlifting State Championships last week in Jackson.
On the girls side Friday (March 28), East Union won with 78 team points, Bruce was second with 37, Scott Central third with 18 and Charleston fourth with 13 points among a 21-team field.
In boys competition Saturday (March 29), Calhoun City was the champ with 34 points, Union placed second with 23, Water Valley third with 17, Scott Central fourth with 17, Lake fifth with 16 and Charleston sixth among a 23-school field.
“Proud of our girls and boys powerlifting teams,” said East Tallahatchie School District Athletic Director LaDon Taylor. “They competed and represented well in the state meet. Also proud of our coaches: head coach Chris Suggs and assistant coaches Sandra Benson and Tevin Bobo.”
Senior Tykeria Davis brought home the only state champion gold medal for CHS. She won first place in the girls 165-pound weight class with a total of 750 pounds — 90 more than the second-place finisher from Eupora. Davis had best lifts of 310 pounds in the squat, 120 bench press and 320 in the deadlift.
The guys’ best placement was secured by junior Lemar Frost, who finished second to take a silver medal in the 275-pound weight class with best lifts totaling 1,330 pounds (580 squat, 250 bench and 500 deadlift).
Henrinesha Williams, a freshman, placed third to earn a bronze medal in the 181-pound class with best lifts of 565 pounds (240 squat, 85 bench and 240 deadlift).
Two other CHS guys also made the victory podium.
Demoria Shannon, a sophomore, was third (bronze) in the 242-pound class with best lifts of 1,165 pounds (440 squat, 210 bench and 515 deadlift).
Treston Vaughn, just an eighth-grader, placed third (bronze) in the 132-pound class with top lifts of 815 pounds (315 squat, 150 bench and 350 deadlift).
Among other CHS lifters:
» Alayashia Autman was fourth in the girls 220-pound weight class.
» Adonis Tellis was fourth in the boys super heavyweight class (308+ pounds).
» Breanna Turner was fifth in the girls 148-pound class.
» Moesha Chambers was sixth in the girls 242-pound weight class.
