Monday, Oct. 5, at 5 p.m., is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election, so circuit clerk offices around the state will be open a half-day on Saturday to accommodate in-person registration.
Tallahatchie County Circuit Clerk Daphane Neal said her offices will be open from 8 a.m. until noon on Oct. 3 to sign up qualified residents not yet registered to vote.
Meanwhile, absentee voting in the county is off to a relatively slow start, with less than 100 people having cast an absentee ballot since they became available Sept. 21.
Neal said she expects the interest in absentee voting will climb quickly in coming weeks as election day nears.
Eligible persons may call Neal’s office in Charleston (647-8758) or in Sumner (375-8515) to request an absentee ballot by mail, or cast an absentee ballot in person at the circuit clerk’s offices.
Remember, COVID-19 precautions are still in place, Neal noted.
“We would appreciate everyone wearing a mask, but we will provide one to any who do not have one,” said Neal. “We will also have hand sanitizer available.”
Among upcoming absentee ballot dates of note are:
» Oct. 24: The circuit clerk’s office will be open from 8 a.m. until noon for in-person absentee voting.
» Oct. 31: On the in-person absentee voting deadline, circuit clerk’s offices around the state will open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. for last-minute in-person absentee balloting.
» Nov. 3: General election and mail-in absentee ballots must be postmarked on or before this date to be valid.
» Nov. 10: Mail-in absentee ballots that were postmarked on or before Nov. 3 must be received by the circuit clerk’s office on this date to be counted.
