Charleston police are searching for a vehicle stolen Monday afternoon (Dec. 9) from outside the Mr. Jiffy convenience store at the corner of Cossar Avenue and Gay Street.
Chief Justin Gammage said local resident Edward Gazaway parked his gray 2004 Buick LeSabre outside the business, left it cranked and went into the store.
“Witnesses saw a younger black male get into the car and drive toward Gay Street,” Gammage noted.
As of Tuesday, the vehicle had not been recovered.
Gammage said a description of the vehicle was placed with the National Crime Information Center and sent to law enforcement agencies in surrounding counties.
Gammage said he has reason to believe that Monday’s car theft is connected to the discovery of a pickup truck reported stolen from Memphis and found abandoned on Sarah Street in Charleston Sunday night.
The chief said the gray two-door Ford F-150 was reported stolen in Memphis at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Gammage noted that the taking of the car was more than likely a crime of opportunity perpetrated by someone “trying to get home.”

Gant faces charges of DUI, no insurance, expired tag, no driver’s license and reckless driving, according to an arrest report on file at the Tallahatchie County Jail.
Gammage said at about 10:40 Friday night, a 2007 Chevrolet Caprice driven by Gant was traveling east on Gay Street when it left the roadway and rammed the rear of a brick house located at 201 Blackberry Street.
The chief said no one in the house was injured. Gant was taken to the emergency room at Tallahatchie General Hospital, where he was treated.
He is out on a $1,000 bond
