The West Tallahatchie High School (WTHS) Alumni Class of 1973 has announced two students, Aniya L. Lewis and Brooklynn A. Williams, as recipients of the annual Dr. Jessie L. McMullen Memorial Scholarship.
Both honorees are 2023 graduates of the school.
Dr. William L. Booker, representing the WTHS Class of 1973, presented Lewis and Williams, the fourth annual Dr. Jessie L. McMullen Memorial Scholarship during the West Tallahatchie senior banquet on May 19.
Miss Lewis is the daughter of Anthony Larmont Lewis and Sharon Diana Chapple of Tutwiler.
Her favorite subjects are History and English. Aniya was selected to be a Delta Honor Graduate at Delta State University. This prestigious society selects two talented and academically committed high school students within an environment that fosters discovery and creativity. The program provided Aniya with much needed skills to compete for college scholarships.
Miss Lewis’ organizational memberships include the West Tallahatchie High School Student Government Association, where she served as president; and Jobs for Mississippi Graduates (JMG), where she also was president. Her major community service projects were the community’s blood and canned food drives.
Miss Lewis is presently in pursuit of a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Mississippi, Oxford, with a major concentration in International Studies and Foreign Affairs in hopes of becoming a translator.
Miss Williams is the daughter of Yolanda S. Williams-McClung of Philipp.
Her favorite subject is math. The president of the West Tallahatchie High School senior class, Miss Williams’ honors and awards included Honor Roll, Principal’s List and an ACT WorkKeys student. She was enrolled in dual-college level courses at Coahoma Community College.
Miss Williams’ organizational membership includes as vice president of the West Tallahatchie High School JMG. She was chosen to represent WTHS in the public speaking division at JMG’s annual competition in Jackson. She participates as a volunteer within her local community and church.
Miss Williams is presently in pursuit of a Bachelor of Education degree at Delta State University in Cleveland. With a major concentration in psychology, she has the goal of becoming an executive business owner.
The WTHS Alumni Class of 1973 has a united vision to empower others to achieve, and to aid in providing effective means to promote quality education, empowerment, social justice and create opportunities for students in their quest of exemplary future endeavors.
They will continue to award annual scholarships to WTHS graduating seniors through a stringent application process.
