WEBB — West Tallahatchie High School English teacher John Fredericks has been selected for the Teach Plus Mississippi program.
The mission of Teach Plus, a nonprofit operating in 11 states across the nation, is to empower excellent, experienced and diverse teachers to take leadership over key policy and practice issues that advance equity, opportunity and student success.
Through Teach Plus programs, teachers from across the state learn how policy is made and how it impacts their classroom.
They also provide training opportunities to change and influence policies at the school, district and state levels, achieving change in schools and in the broader education system.
Fredericks is one of 25 Mississippi educators selected to be a part of the Teach Plus Mississippi 2022-23 Policy Fellowship cohort.
Each Fellow was chosen “based on their strong commitment to the classroom and to equity, their ability to articulate the needs of their students and their pursuit of excellence and innovation in their teaching,” according to the organization.
This is Teach Plus Mississippi’s fourth cohort of Policy Fellows, and this year’s group will focus on a range of issues of importance to teachers, students and parents, including teacher preparation, mentorship and retention, among others.
“My goal is to familiarize myself with the data surrounding teacher mentorship programs and study some of the more successful ones in the state,” said Fredericks. “I want to build a teacher mentorship apparatus at West Tally to increase teacher retention.”
