The Tallahatchie County COVID-19 death toll now stands at 54 after the Mississippi State Department of Health announced another in its daily report on Tuesday, Jan. 25.
After review of a death certificate report, the agency said the virus has been determined as the cause of death of a local person who died Sept. 5, 2021.
Since that date, eight kindred deaths have been reported in the county. The 53rd was revealed on Nov. 22.
The first local positive case of COVID-19 was reported on March 23, 2020, and the first death on April 17, 2020.
In figures reported Thursday, Jan. 27, the Health Department noted that a total of 2,924 Tallahatchians have been infected with COVID-19 since the outbreak began. Statewide Thursday, that number stood at 712,133, with 10,806 deaths.
The omicron variant has caused a massive resurgence of the virus, with an average of 5,390 new cases reported daily in the state over the past month. This is after the daily count had shrunk to as few as 225 new cases on Nov. 16.
MSDH reported Monday, Jan. 24, that 572,098 Mississippians are presumed to have recovered from a bout with COVID, a figure that the agency updates weekly.
Thursday figures revealed the following number of reported COVID-19 positive cases and related deaths among area counties since the first were discovered in March 2020:

» Grenada, 5,026 cases, 113 deaths
» Lafayette, 13,412 cases, 159 deaths
» Leflore, 6,941 cases, 146 deaths
» Panola, 9,487 cases, 143 deaths
» Quitman, 1,466 cases, 28 deaths
» Sunflower, 5,458 cases, 111 deaths
» Tallahatchie, 2,924 cases, 54 deaths
» Yalobusha, 3,654 cases, 50 deaths
