Unemployment in Tallahatchie County rose from 2.9% in May to stand at 3.6% in June, according to estimates released Tuesday by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
In June, 190 Tallahatchians were unemployed, and 4,940 employed, from a local labor force totaling 5,130. The labor force consists of everyone who has a job or is actively looking for one.
In May, 140 local residents were jobless, and 4,810 working, among a labor force of 4,950, according to MDES.
Tallahatchie County’s June unemployment rate was five-tenths of 1% lower than the 4.1% jobless rate of June 2023, when 200 local residents were unemployed and 4,570 employed, among a labor force tallying 4,770.
The national rate of unemployment during June was 4.3%, a jump of six-tenths of a percent from May’s 3.7%, and five-tenths of 1% lower than June 2023’s rate of 3.8%.
Mississippi’s jobless rate stood at 3.7% in June, up eight-tenths of 1% from May’s 2.9% but an improvement of four-tenths of 1% from 4.1% one year ago.
MDES noted that historically, Mississippi’s unemployment rate has risen from May to June as the full impact of students entering the labor force is felt.

At 14.9%, Jefferson County had the highest unemployment rate in the state. Union County posted the lowest June rate of 2.5%.
