Four more Tallahatchians have qualified to seek office in this year’s municipal elections, and still others are anticipated before Friday’s 5 p.m. deadline.
The qualifying window opened on Jan. 4 and closes Feb. 5. Primary election day is Tuesday, April 6. A primary runoff, if needed, would be April 27. The general election is scheduled for June 8.
Those who are elected in June will begin a new four-year term on July 1.
All of the latest qualifiers, according to Tuesday afternoon reports from municipal clerks, will be trying to unseat current officeholders in their respective municipalities.
The new qualifiers are:
Charleston
» Ashanti Truly Kuykendall, 39, of 161 N. Vine St., for Ward 2 city commissioner
Tutwiler
» Sherry Thomas Ellington, 62, of 751 Central St., for Ward 3 alderman
» Patricia Burnside, 70, of 2877 Highway 49 W., for Ward 4 alderman
» Queen Ester Jones, 67, of 289 Beaver Dam Road, for Ward 2 alderman
Prospective candidates must file qualifying papers and pay any required qualifying fees at their local municipal clerk’s office.
