UPDATE (1:35 p.m.): Repair of this broken Charleston water main has been completed.
Charleston Mayor Sedrick Smith notified The Sun-Sentinel shortly before 11:30 Tuesday morning that the city water department is working to repair a burst 6-inch water main near the elevated water tower at the Charleston Industrial Park.
He said it is hoped the repair can be made quickly.
The break this morning caused interruption of water service to Charleston and East Charleston utility customers after work on Monday had restored much of the system's pressure that was lost during last week's winter weather events.
All Charleston water customers are asked to remember that the city is still under a boil water alert that was issued late last week. Any tap water intended for consumption should be boiled at least one minute to kill any bacteria that may possibly be present. The Mississippi State Department of Health will notify the city that the alert can be lifted once water samples indicate the water is safe to drink.
