Mississippi’s annual back-to-school time sales tax holiday is scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 26, and end at 12 midnight on Saturday, July 27.
A sales tax holiday is a temporary period when sales taxes are not collected or paid on purchases of certain items.
This year’s big news is that for the first time ever, the tax-free event now includes purchases of school supplies. In the past, school supplies were not eligible for the exemption.
In addition to school supplies, the 7 percent sales tax will not be due on purchases of clothing and footwear, as long as the sales price of a single item is less than $100.
The Mississippi Department of Revenue specifies that “accessories such as jewelry, handbags, wallets, watches, backpacks and similar items do not qualify for the sales tax holiday.”
