TUTWILER — A Mississippi Department of Corrections inmate died Aug. 12 after being assaulted by a fellow inmate at the Tallahatchie Coiunty Correctional Facility here.
MDOC revealed the fatal incident in a Friday (Aug. 14) afternoon news release.
The victim, identified as state inmate Lester Andre Henderson, 36, died before he could be transported to the hospital last Wednesday evening, MDOC noted. The nature of the inmate-on-inmate attack was not disclosed.
Henderson, of Laurel, was serving a 15-year sentence for unlawful touching of a child in Harrison County. He had been sentenced May 2, 2013, according to MDOC.
Following last week's attack at Tutwiler, "Facility administrators notified MDOC's Corrections Investigation Division, which is assisting the private prison in its investigation," the statement added.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation also is involved in the ongoing investigation.
MDOC contracts with the Nashville-based private prison operator, CoreCivic, to house state inmates at the Tutwiler facility.
