A Batesville man has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with a Feb. 13 attack on a Charleston resident who was stabbed in the chest.
Antonyro Draper, 38, of 246B Butler St., Batesville, is accused of becoming embroiled in a physical altercation with local resident Jimmy Daniels outside a residence on Sabine Street near the sawmill in Charleston.
During the incident, which occurred shortly before midnight, Daniels was stabbed once in the chest, Charleston Police Chief Justin Gammage said Tuesday.
“He had injuries to his lung,” the chief noted.
Daniels was transported to the emergency room at Tallahatchie General Hospital, where he was treated and then transferred by ambulance to the Elvis Presley Trauma Center at Regional One Health in Memphis, Gammage explained.
The chief, who said Daniels was transferred to Memphis “just for precautionary reasons,” was treated there and released.
Draper allegedly fled the scene after the incident, Gammage noted, but was tracked down in Batesville.
“The officers were able to get the identity of him, and through police work they got the model of his car and the tag number of the vehicle, then put out a be on the lookout,” the chief said. “With the assistance of the Batesville Police Department, we were able to find him.”
Draper was booked into the Tallahatchie County Jail in Charleston at 1:09 a.m. Feb. 14. He was released later that day after posting bail of $5,000, Gammage said.
Police recovered a possible weapon, a small ice pick, from the scene, the chief noted.
“We’re in the process of trying to analyze and see if it was the weapon that stabbed Mr. Daniels,” Gammage said.
The case remains under investigation, the chief noted, adding, “We’re not sure what the altercation was over.”
In another assault case that also occurred on the night of Feb. 13, a Charleston woman was arrested after allegedly striking her daughter’s supposed boyfriend, Brian O. Johnson, in the head with a baseball bat.
Volanda M. Frazier, 41, of 709 E. Chestnut St., was charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident that occurred at her residence shortly after 10 p.m.
“Ms. Frazier’s daughter was in a dating relationship with Mr. Johnson,” Gammage said. “They had some form of disagreement over there, and Ms. Frazier was trying to defend her daughter and struck Mr. Johnson in the head.”
Johnson, 29, of 37 Elm St., Charleston, also was arrested and charged with domestic violence simple assault due to an alleged physical altercation that preceded the bat swing, the chief added.
Johnson was taken to the emergency room at TGH, where he was treated and released into the custody of city police.
“After he was seen by medical personnel, he was taken to jail,” Gammage noted.
Frazier was released at 11:55 p.m. after posting bail of $2,500, while Johnson was released at 12:30 a.m. Feb. 14 after posting bail of $1,500.
