Two school board positions up for grabs in this year’s general election in Tallahatchie County drew only one seeker each by Friday’s qualifying deadline, including one late last week.
Incumbent Darrell W. Neal, 51, of 93 Pamplin Road, Charleston, filed qualifying papers Sept. 5 to seek re-election to his Education District 9 post on the East Tallahatchie School District Board of Trustees. Neal, who has held the Charleston seat for two terms, presently serves as the board chairman.
Already in the running for the other slot was Sharon Elaine Jackson-Bailey, of 256 Main St., Webb, who filed qualifying papers Aug. 26 to seek the Education District 4 position on the West Tallahatchie School District Board of Trustees, which is vacant.
That chair was previously held by Webb Mayor Tracy Mims, who resigned July 16 after serving 14 years and seven months on the school board. His third, five-year term was set to expire at the end of 2019. Mims said he was resigning to have more time to devote as chair of the Children’s Trust Fund for the state of Mississippi.
Members of the East and West Tallahatchie school districts’ five-member boards of trustees serve staggered five-year terms, with one seat in each school district coming up for election every fall.
Neal and Jackson-Bailey will have no opposition in the Nov. 5 general election, when their names are set to appear on the ballots of voters in their respective districts.
