One person has qualified for a school board position up for election this year in Tallahatchie County, Circuit Court Daphane Neal said Tuesday (Aug. 27).
According to a Qualifying Statement of Intent on file in Neal's office, Sharon Elaine Jackson-Bailey, of 256 Main St., Webb, filed qualifying papers on the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 26, in Education District 4, representing a seat on the West Tallahatchie School District Board of Trustees.
The post was formerly held by Tracy Mims, also of Webb, who resigned July 16 after serving 14 years and seven months on the board. Mims' third five-year term was set to expire at the end of 2019.
Members of the East and West Tallahatchie school districts' five-member boards of trustees serve staggered five-year terms, with one seat in each district coming up for election every fall. This year's Nov. 5 general election will feature not only the trustee post in Education District 4, but also Education District 9, the latter being a seat on the East Tallahatchie School District Board of Trustees. As of earlier this week, no one had qualified for the ETSD position.
The qualifying period for school board opened Aug. 7, and the qualifying deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6.
Although there is no qualifying fee for school board, candidates must gather on a petition, 50 signatures from registered voters who live within the boundaries of their respective education district. Properly formatted petition forms are available from the circuit clerk's offices in Charleston and Sumner.
