SUMNER — Due to ongoing renovations of its water, sewer and drainage systems, the town of Sumner has announced certain traffic restrictions for next week’s Oct. 31 Halloween observance, scheduled locally for 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Due to present street conditions, Town Clerk Toni Clark said the Sumner mayor and Board of Aldermen have decided to close North and South Cassidy and North and South Jennings streets to vehicular traffic during this time.
“All are welcome to come walk to treat or treat in these areas,” officials noted in a flyer that Clark said was posted around town on Tuesday (Oct. 22).
Parking for trick or treating is available on the Sumner Square, adjacent to the post office, at the boat ramp or in the First Baptist Church parking lot.
Trick or treaters are asked to park in a designated parking spot and walk to Cassidy and Jennings streets via the sidewalk on the Cassidy Bayou Bridge, to not go into any areas that are roped off, to not park on Tate Street and to not block any driveway. Violators will be towed, the flyer stated.
Clark said Sumner Police Chief Maurice Brooks also offers the following safety tips to keep in mind this Halloween:
» Some interpret Halloween as a night of mischief. Parents are asked to review acceptable behavior with their children.
» Take a moment to examine your property for hazards to trick or treaters.
» Costumes should be flame resistant and made of bright or reflective material that does not impede the child's ability to walk.
» Masks that interfere with a child's ability to see can be very dangerous. Please make sure that your child can clearly see side to side.
» Trick or treaters should always be accompanied by an adult.
» Bring a flashlight to illuminate your path, as there are uneven surfaces on the streets of Sumner.
» Cross streets at street corners.
» Inspect all treats before eating them.
