Tallahatchie County’s unemployment rate rose from 6.3% in June to 6.4% in July, according to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
In July, 360 Tallahatchians were unemployed, and 5,160 employed, from a local labor force totaling 5,520. The labor force consists of everyone who has a job or is actively looking for one.
In June, 350 had been jobless, while 5,160 were working, among a labor force of 5,510, according to MDES.
Tallahatchie County’s July unemployment rate was five-tenths of 1 percent higher than the 5.9% jobless rate of July 2018, when 320 local residents were unemployed, and 5,100 employed, among a labor force of 5,420.
The national rate of unemployment during July was 4.0%, slightly above June’s 3.8 and down one-tenth of 1 percent from 4.1% in July 2018.
Mississippi’s jobless rate stood at 6.1% in July, a rise of one-tenth of 1 percent from June’s 6.0% and a significant jump of eight-tenths of 1% from the 5.3% figure of one year ago.

At 18.3%, Jefferson County recorded the highest unemployment rate in the Magnolia State, while Rankin County’s 4.2% rate of joblessness was the best during July.
