The Democratic and Republican front-runners for president dominated Tallahatchie County and Mississippi during Tuesday’s primary elections.
Democrat Hillary Clinton received 87 percent of the local vote, racking up 1,341 votes. Bernie Sanders had 11 percent, garnering 166 votes. Willie Wilson got 12 while Rocky De La Fuente and Martin O’Malley had 8 each.
Republican presidential hopeful Donald J. Trump picked up 769 Tallahatchie County votes (64 percent), Ted Cruz 313 (26 percent), John R. Kasich 65 (5 percent) and Marco Rubio 40 (3 percent). Ben Carson got 15 votes and Mike Huckabee 4. Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Carly Fiorina and Rand Paul all got one apiece.
Incumbent Democratic Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, unopposed for his party’s nomination, earned 1,379 local votes. His Republican opponent in November, John Bouie II, also unopposed, received 919.
Sykes Sturdivant of Glendora, who represents Tallahatchie County on the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta Levee Board, received 692 votes in the county in Tuesday’s Democratic primary. Sturdivant is unopposed for re-election in November.
About 29 percent of Tallahatchie County’s 9,598 registered voters cast a ballot in Tuesday’s primaries.
The general election will be Tuesday, Nov. 8.
