A woman arrested in connection with an incident that seriously injured her reputed boyfriend faces an even stiffer charge now that he has died, according to Charleston Police Chief John Page.
Aletha Scott, 32, of County Road 117, Tillatoba, was booked Monday on a charge of manslaughter. She waived a preliminary hearing in Charleston Municipal Court and was bound over to a grand jury, bond at $100,000.
Page said Scott was transferred to the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler, where she remained incarcerated as of Tuesday.
Scott initially was charged with aggravated assault with a vehicle for the April 2 incident on Saint Charles Street in which she allegedly struck pedestrian Lezelrick Poole with her eastbound 2007 Chevrolet Malibu.
Poole, 29, of 425 Rosalind St., Charleston, was left in critical condition with a head injury. He died April 6 at a Memphis hospital.
Mississippi Highway Patrol accident reconstructionists and agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) have worked on the case.
Page said he is awaiting both a preliminary case report from MBI and an autopsy report.
