Jetta Kuykendall of Columbia, Mississippi, passed away Nov. 26 at the age of 95. Jetta was predeceased by her husband Billy, who grew up in Oakland. Graveside services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Oakland Cemetery.
Thanksgiving Day was a pretty big to-do at Mother’s (Margaret Jean Ross). We had 41 for lunch. Four of those are babies born into the family since last Thanksgiving! We hope your gatherings, whether small or large, were just right for you.
Of course, like Mississippians across the state and beyond, we were very interested in the Egg Bowl! Most of us thought it turned out right but there were a few pulling for the Dawgs. Then, of course, the soap opera of Lane Kiffin kept us checking Twitter, aka X, and other sources until finally we learned that Kiffin is turning purple and gold. The new Ole Miss head coach, Pete Golding, may have Oakland connections. I will do a little more research on that before sharing as a certainty.
Don’t forget that we have a twilight children’s Christmas tea on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 4:30 in downtown Oakland and all kids are invited! Santa will be there and there will be activities and refreshments.
Dress for outdoor activities! If we have rain, we will move the activities into the Chamber offices at 304 Holly St., next door to the library. Following the children’s tea, we will have the lighting of the town Christmas tree at 5:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Oakland Public Library.
We are excited to have the Stayin Alive Singers from DeSoto County who will join us in their Victorian carolers’ attire. After the lighting of the tree, we will move into the Chamber office for a brief community Christmas service.
The Town of Oakland is getting new street signs (see photo). All streets will receive signs, but the installation began in the downtown area and will branch out from there. The signs are beautiful and we were needing some new ones!
