June is coming in hot! Mother and I just strolled uptown at 5 p.m. and it is 91 degrees. We were grateful for the few bits of shade on our trip back home. I’m really not ready for this!
We said it was cooler on Saturday morning at the ballpark when we went over to Water Valley to watch Kash Mastrangelo play baseball. His team won all three of their games, which were played back-to-back-to-back with a little break. Mother and I stayed for one. Kash had his Mastrangelo family from Georgia watching him play along with a host of Ross and Burney kin. We also ran into Patty and Steve Bailey while we were out and about. It is always good to see them.
Mother wanted to see the new Nabors Home Center on Highway 7 in Water Valley. They have only been open a few weeks, but we were really impressed with the mer- chandise and the friendly staff. Mother helped them sell a few fans while she was there! She bought two herself because she liked the brand and the price and we have already put them to use!
We enjoyed a visit from Kay Peeples. Kay was one of the Conner family who lived next door to us growing up. It is always fun to get caught up on the family and reminisce about days gone by.
It’s also a good time of year because people are sharing from their gardens! Fay Tackett brought green beans and Jennifer Ross brought squash. Oakland Baptist Church had a potluck lunch after Sunday service and the veggies were on big display there. We definitely ate good!
June is a month with several holidays and observances. Flag Day is June 14 and commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. Juneteenth is June 19 and is now a federal holiday recognizing the freedom of enslaved African Americans and the day in 1865 when the news of that freedom reached the people of Galveston, Texas. Of course, we have Father’s Day on Sunday, June 21, which is also Summer Solstice marking the first official day of summer and the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
Then there are a multitude of other days including National Say Something Nice Day on June 1 (I hope you did without being told!). That’s also National Go Barefoot Day. National Bubba Day is June 2, National Egg Day is June 3. On June 4 is Hug Your Cat Day and Cheese Day. Doughnut Day, Moonshine Day and Veggie Burger Day are all celebrated on June 5. This weekend you have Yo-Yo Day and Eyewear Day.
These are just a few. I don’t know who comes up with some of these and I don’t know how you get a day proclaimed, but I think at this point you should just wake up every morning and decide on a day you want to name and celebrate it!
Don’t forget fish camp on June 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for ages 10-15 at the Bob Tyler Fish Hatchery Visitor Education Center. The full- day camp will include fish identification, water safety tips, a tour of the hatchery, and catfish fishing in the hatchery’s Visitor Education Center (VEC) pond! Participants will also meet a National Park Service ranger and learn about the Junior Angler Badge! The program is free but space is limited so pre-registration is re-quired! To pre-register call the VEC at 662-563-8068 or email Emily-Jo.Wiggins@wfp.ms.gov to receive a registration form.
