Sharon Bell Hamilton of Plainview, Arkansas, has spent several days recently in Oakland doing genealogy research and spending time with family. She is a great researcher and has done family history for several families in the area.
Margaret Scott White, who runs the Oakland Area Agency on Aging program, reports that they have had three new people to join the program. They visited the Lewis Johnson Complex in Grenada to participate in a Cancer Walk and Health Fair one day. They also celebrated two birthdays with ice cream and cookies. Happy birthday to Sammie L. Bland and Linda Gail White.
Margaret asks that we keep the Scott family in prayer as they travel to Maryland to lay their beloved sister Velma Scott-Walston to rest.
We also extend sympathy to LaTonya Richardson Sayle and family in the loss of her grandmother, Clara Richardson. LaTonya is one of Oakland’s most active volunteers and currently serves as president of the Lions Club. Her daughter, Leyah, serves as the youth representative to our Chamber.
Congratulations to Enid Depot owner Brent Tippitt on receiving word that his building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is officially known as The Mitchell & McClendon General Merchants Building and is 118 years old. It is wonderful to see these buildings being maintained and still useful. The Enid Depot was voted Mississippi’s Best Steak in last year’s Mississippi Beef Council competition and voting is underway for this year’s title!
Congratulations to Bailey and Hillary Ross on the birth of their son, Sadler, who was born on Oct. 10 and weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces. He is welcomed by his big brother, Gatlin. The Ross family can’t wait to meet him! I think he is great-grand No. 16 for Mother (Margaret Ross). She’s had three born since late July!
Two of Mother’s grandsons from Florida stopped by for a visit on a recent bow-hunting trip. She is always happy to see Max and Eli Smith.
Mother and I had delightful visits with some of our Cook family a few Sundays ago. We first stopped by to see Renee Cook Glover and also got to see two of her sons, a daughter-in-law, and two cute grandchildren. Then we drove over to see John and Sherry Cook and their son John Austin and his family with two more very cute little ones who were also there. We timed it just right and got invited to eat supper! It was a new recipe Sherry was trying out and we loved it!
The Oakland Area Chamber is launching a fundraising raffle benefitting our Oakland Volunteer Fire Department. We will have some great items. You can participate all day long in Halloween events in the Oakland area on Oct. 25. Halloween at the Hatchery (Enid Lake) is from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; Halloween at Cossar State Park runs from 4-7 p.m.; and Oakland Downtown Trunk or Treat is from 5-7 p.m.
Thank you to all the people who make these activities and events happen! It takes a tribe to pull all of these things together and it makes for such community spirit and growth.
