Tuesday’s primary runoff election here in Tallahatchie County continued as scheduled despite several hiccups being reported by voters.
In one case, a number of voters said their ballot featured state races but not the appropriate local races. At another precinct, a faulty encoder device, which embeds ballot information on the card that voters place in the touch-screen voting machine, caused issues.
One official Tuesday night said the county’s election systems need updating, lamenting that the only way it is likely to be done is with the aid of federal funding.
This is not only a local problem; it is statewide, even nationwide. Russia probably cannot hack into our local voting equipment, because it is not even connected to the internet. But there are other concerns, including ensuring that the machinery works properly, the voting process is fair, and the results are verifiably accurate.
