Tuesday is general election day throughout Mississippi and Tallahatchie County.
Because there are statewide and countywide races on local ballots, every properly registered voter at every precinct is eligible to participate.
The polls will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, and will close at 7 p.m. Remember, every voter in line at 7 p.m. is entitled to cast a ballot.
The Mississippi secretary of state’s office has passed along a few important reminders.
» The in-person absentee voting deadline is Saturday, Nov. 2. Circuit clerk’s offices around the state, including in Charleston and Sumner, will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday. The deadline to vote by mail is Monday, Nov. 4, when circuit clerk’s offices must be in actual receipt of the absentee ballot by 5 p.m. Voters impacted by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, including service members deployed outside their county of residence, must absentee vote by 7 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 5.
» A polling place locator that can help you find out where you are supposed to vote is available on the secretary of state’s website at www.sos.ms.gov/PollingPlace/Pages/default.aspx. A sample ballot specific to the voter’s polling place is located on the polling place locator website.
» Voters are required to show photo identification at the polls. A voter without an acceptable form of photo ID is entitled to cast an affidavit ballot, which then may be counted if the voter provides an acceptable form of photo identification to the circuit clerk’s office within five business days after the election.
» It is unlawful to campaign for any candidate within 150 feet of any entrance to a polling place, unless on private property.
» Polling places should be clear for 30 feet from each entrance of all people except elections officials, voters waiting to vote, or authorized poll watchers.
» Voters are prohibited from taking pictures of their marked ballot, even with their cellphone.
