Charleston is fortunate to have a number of dedicated, hard-working, talented and civic-minded groups working to improve the quality of life.
One such organization is the Charleston Main Street Association.
The two-year-old entity has battled some ups and downs, struggling to build a public identity and widespread support, including paid memberships, but the association has been led and guided by some of the most energetic and forward-thinking people the city has to offer.
After going through some reorganization — the group now operates under the sponsorship and auspices of city of Charleston government — Main Street, led by director Norma Platt and a volunteer board of local businessmen and others, has landed with all four wheels on the ground.
The “Main Street Reimagined” project, a beautification effort that utilizes volunteers and donated paint to give a fresh look to downtown businesses both occupied and vacant, is making a real difference in the appearance and feel of the Main Street area.
Just a couple of weeks ago, the group introduced some live greenery — baskets hanging from awnings, as well as ground-level planters — along the sidewalks on West Main Street and in areas of Court Square. That project to introduce a fresh look to the city’s business section is making it seem more vibrant and welcoming.
We will hear about and see much more from the Charleston Main Street Association, and we look forward to each new positive development.
