Under Federal Emergency Management Agency and Mississippi Emergency Management Agency disaster funding guidelines, Charleston Mayor Sedrick Smith announced Monday that city officials will be hiring private contractors to pick up limbs and other debris in the city in the wake of the recent ice storm.
He noted, however, that the city-hired contractors WILL NOT go onto private property to remove limbs or branches. He stressed that all such debris must be placed curbside.
"If you have a hanging limb or limbs on the ground, you have to get it out to the curb," Smith said, adding that no set date has been established for the start of debris removal.
Smith said local governments will be reimbursed for the cost of debris removal through disaster relief funds.
