UPDATE: Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly, in a text message sent at 9:45 p.m. Thursday night, said the search for Sam Seymore "has been called off for now." Fly asked "everyone to please take the keys out of your vehicles and lock them."
He said the last K-9 indication of Seymore's presence was in the area of Pressgrove Road near Poplar Springs Cemetery.
"If anyone has any information, please contact the Sheriff's Office at 662-647-5511 or 662-647-3700," Fly said.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Tallahatchie County residents in the area of Ascalmore Creek Road at Smith Road should be aware there is an ongoing search for a man who may or may not be armed and dangerous, according to Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly.
Tracking dogs from Batesville law enforcement and the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman are aiding in the search for Sam Seymore, 49, of 2738 Highway 35 S., Holcomb, who allegedly evaded law enforcement during an automobile chase that ensued about 8:30 Thursday morning (July 10).
The North Mississippi Herald newspaper in Water Valley reported on their social media that Yalobusha County sheriff's deputies had tried to stop Seymore's vehicle in the Tillatoba area of Yalobusha County.
From its beginnings in Yalobusha County, the chase continued into Grenada County and then Tallahatchie County, Fly noted.
It was on Ascalmore Creek Road near Smith Road that Fly said Seymore, and a female who is believed to be his girlfriend, abandoned Smith's pickup truck and apparently fled into adjacent woods. The truck was discovered by Tallahatchie County deputies at 9:43 Thursday, the sheriff noted.
"We're not positive that he is armed," Fly said. "There was some ammunition outside the abandoned vehicle, but it's unknown whether or not he's armed or if that's something that was in the truck that just fell out when he got out."
Seymore has outstanding warrants in Yalobusha County, including multiple grand larceny charges and also attempted aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, Fly noted.
Fly said Seymore is wanted in Tallahatchie County for burglary of a commercial building and petty larceny.
"Everybody in that area of Ascalmore Creek Road and Smith Road, just be aware. There will be a heavy law enforcement presence in the area for a good while today," he added.
The sheriff said he also spoke with a representative from Camp Lakeside, a Baptist campground where children are presently camping.
"They have gone on lockdown, but this is all on the other side of Ascalmore Creek Road," noted Fly. "But we sent a deputy to Camp Lakeside just to kind of be in that area."
Seymore is identified as a white male with black hair and blue eyes, standing 6-0 and weighing about 240 pounds.
