Freddrick L. Hervey is making a name for himself both on the football field and in the classroom at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba.
Hervey, a 2018 graduate of Charleston High School, is a sophomore at EMCC, where he is majoring in general studies. He graduates in December and plans to pursue a degree in forestry, with hopes of becoming a forester.
His prowess as a football player — during the 2018 season, the linebacker racked up 93 tackles (including 15½ for a loss), four sacks and an interception en route to being named first-team All-State by the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges — has brought him a scholarship offer from Arkansas State University.
However, his loyalties also have him eyeing the “big three” of his home state: Mississippi State University, The University of Mississippi and The University of Southern Mississippi.
Hervey, who recently received two football championship rings from EMCC — one for the state championship and the other for the national title won by the Lions this past season — not only has excelled in athletics, but also as a student in the classroom.
In April, he was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the international honor society of two-year colleges and academic programs.
Fred, as he is known by many family members and friends, is the son of Leon Carl Hervey and Tonya Hervey and the nephew of Garnette Hervey of Paynes.
Garnette said the hometown support for Fred has been tremendous, motivating and uplifting, adding, “We want to thank all the people who have supported him this far.”
