Both of the Charleston High School powerlifting teams won their respective regional meets recently in the CHS gymnasium.
The Lady Tigers lifted their way to a fifth straight region championship at the Class II, Region 2 meet on Feb. 8. The Charleston girls amassed 68 points, M.S. Palmer 47 and Noxubee County 36.
The Tiger guys won the Class 3A, Region 2 meet Feb. 6. Charleston compiled 61 points. M.S. Palmer and Holly Springs finished second and third, with 42 and 34, respectively.
The teams now prepare for their north half competitions, with hopes of qualifying as many as possible for the state championships.
The girls’ Class II north half meet will be Tuesday, March 1, in the Charleston gym.
The boys’ Class 3A north half meet is scheduled for Friday, March, 4 in the Kossuth High School gym in Alcorn County.

By virtue of top-three finishes in their weight class at the regional meet, 11 of 12 members of head coach Jeff Hollingsworth’s Lady Tiger team qualified to compete at the north half event.
Six of the 11 won their weight class while the remaining five captured second place finishes during the regionals.
Earning a spot in the north half meet were:
• Junior Mikayla Robinson, who won the 97-pound class with lifts totaling 365 pounds (130 squat, 70 bench press and 165 deadlift)
• Eighth-grader Asia Johnson, who topped the 105-pound class with lifts totaling 460 pounds (190 squat, 80 bench and 190 deadlift)
• Sophomore Tashyra Truly, who won the 132-pound class with lifts totaling 635 pounds (240 squat, 95 bench press and 300 deadlift)
• Junior Destiny Turner, who was first in the 148-pound class with lifts totaling 695 pounds (265 squat, 110 bench press and 320 deadlift)
• Junior Deneisha Pittman, who won the 165-pound class with lifts totaling 720 pounds (285 squat, 115 bench press and 320 deadlift)
• Junior Destini Curtis, who won the 181-pound class with lifts amounting to 765 pounds (300 squat, 135 bench press and 330 deadlift)
• Eighth-grader Tynesha Cosby, second in the 114-pound class with lifts totaling 445 pounds (175 squat, 85 bench and 185 deadlift)
• Freshman Latandra Johnson, second in the 123-pound class with lifts totaling 450 pounds (150 squat, 75 bench press and 225 deadlift)
• Eighth-grader Aaliyah Bowen, second in the 148-pound class with lifts totaling 585 pounds (220 squat, 80 bench and 285 deadlift)
• Sophomore Brielle Shegog, second in the 165-pound class with lifts totaling 595 pounds (240 squat, 105 bench press and 250 deadlift)
• Sophomore Jasmine Suggs, second in the 181-pound class with lifts totaling 600 pounds (185 squat, 115 bench press and 300 deadlift)
The other Lady Tiger who competed at the regionals was sophomore Kelisa Haywood, who finished fifth in the 132-pound class with lifts amounting to 445 pounds (170 squat, 75 bench press and 200 deadlift).

Just like their female counterparts, head coach Scott Martin’s Charleston Tiger powerlifting team were able to qualify 11 of 12 members for the north half.
Of those 11 boys, five won their respective weight class, three captured second place and three finished in third place during the recent regional competition.
Earning a spot in the north half meet were:
• Freshman Jeffrey Lofton, who won the 148-pound class with lifts totaling 850 pounds (315 squat, 170 bench press and 365 deadlift)
• Junior Rickey Sutton, who won the 181-pound class with lifts totaling 1,060 pounds (400 squat, 210 bench press and 450 deadlift)
• Senior C.J. Buckley, who won the 220-pound class with lifts totaling 1,275 pounds (500 squat, 275 bench press and 500 deadlift)
• Junior Hakeem Pittman, who won the 275-pound class with lifts totaling 1,180 pounds (450 squat, 300 bench press and 430 deadlift)
• Senior Walter Barnes, who won the 308-pound class with lifts totaling 1,440 pounds (550 squat, 265 bench press and 625 deadlift)
• Senior Stephon Loggins, second in the 123-pound class with lifts totaling 820 pounds (320 squat, 150 bench press and 350 deadlift)
• Junior Jotavious Smith, second in the 132-pound class with lifts totaling 685 pounds (265 squat, 115 bench and 305 deadlift)
• Junior Cody Friday, second in the 198-pound class with lifts totaling 935 pounds (275 squat, 205 bench press and 455 deadlift)
• Freshman Shaundrick Cashaw, third in the 123-pound class with lifts totaling 700 pounds (270 squat, 150 bench press and 280 deadlift)
• Junior Kili Davis, third in the 275-pound class with lifts totaling 970 pounds (400 squat, 185 bench press and 385 deadlift)
• Junior Raheem Wilson, third in the 308-pound class with lifts totaling 1,150 pounds (425 squat, 235 bench press and 490 deadlift)
The other Tiger competing at regionals was freshman Quinton Crawford, who placed fourth in the 165-pound class with lifts totaling 845 pounds (300 squat, 195 bench and 350 deadlift).
