The Charleston High School Lady Tigers placed third at Saturday’s Mississippi High School Activities Association State Powerlifting Championships in Jackson.
Coach Jeff Hollingsworth’s CHS girls compete in Class II, comprised of athletes from Class 3A and Class 4A public school classifications.
Moss Point won the division by amassing 37 team points. Itawamba was second with 29 points, while Charleston finished with 20 points.
Three Lady Tigers medaled, with junior Destini Curtis winning her 181-pound weight class with lifts totaling 790 pounds (315 squat, 140 bench-press and 335 deadlift).
Eighth-grader Asia Johnson claimed the second-place spot in the 105-pound weight class with lifts totaling 490 pounds (205 squat, 280 bench and 205 deadlift).
Sophomore Jasmine Suggs took third place in the 181-pound weight class with lifts of 695 pounds (285 squat, 120 bench and 290 deadlift).
Also competing for Charleston’s girls were the following:
• Sophomore Tashyra Truly, fourth in the 132-pound weight class with lifts totaling 640 pounds (265 squat, 105 bench and 270 deadlift)
• Junior Deneshia Pittman, fourth in the 165-pound weight class with lifts totaling 740 pounds (295 squat, 125 bench and 320 deadlift)
• Junior Mikayla Robinson, fifth in the 97-pound weight class with lifts totaling 355 pounds (115 squat, 75 bench and 165 deadlift)
THE CHS BOYS took sixth place in Class 3A competition at Saturday’s boys’ state powerlifting meet at the Mississippi Coliseum. Scott Martin is the boys’ head coach.
Velma Jackson won the 3A championship by amassing 35 team points. Kossuth was second with 34 points, Morton third with 28, North Pontotoc fourth with 19, Forest fifth with 17 and Charleston gathered 12.
One Tiger won his weight class and a total of three medaled.
Senior Stephan Loggins won the 123-pound weight class with lifts totaling 910 pounds (370 squat, 165 bench and 375 deadlift).
Senior Walter Barnes took second place in the 308-pound weight class with lifts totaling 1,570 pounds. His 670-pound deadlift set a new state record in that event. Barnes also had a best squat of 600 pounds and best bench-press of 300 pounds.
Junior Hakeem Pittman was third in the 275-pound weight class with lifts totaling 1,320 pounds (510 squat, 315 bench and 495 deadlift)
Other CHS guys competing were:
• Junior Cody Friday, fourth in the 198-pound weight class with lifts totaling 1,135 pounds (400 squat, 235 bench and 500 deadlift)
• Freshman Jeffery Loston, sixth in the 148-pound weight class with lifts totaling 890 pounds (350 squat, 170 bench and 370 deadlift)
• Junior Rickey Sutton, sixth in the 181-pound weight class with best lifts totaling 1,180 pounds (480 squat, 215 bench and 485 deadlift)
