Calvary Food Pantry to distribute
Calvary Food Pantry, at 36 Ward-Riddick Road, just east of Parchman off Highway 32, will distribute food 8-9 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, for those living in the West Tallahatchie area and in Sunflower County outside the city limits of Drew. Any car in line on time at 9 a.m. will be served, but those arriving late will not be served. Distribution day is usually the next-to-last Saturday of each month but is being moved up to Friday due to weather.
Calvary Food Pantry serves from a drive-thru at its warehouse behind the main building at Calvary Chapel of Parchman. The facility is clearly visible on the north side of the highway, and is marked with a large sign.
Faith Food Pantry to distribute
Faith Food Pantry, located at 30028 Highway 32, Charleston, will distribute food early, on Friday, Jan. 23, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. due to weather. Distribution day is usually the next-to-last Saturday of each month.
Ladies paint night on tap at CAC
The Charleston Arts Center (CARE building) will host a ladies paint night class on Friday, Jan. 23, starting at 5:30 p.m. The event offers a fun-filled evening for ladies to learn painting techniques while enjoying food and beverages. The class is free, but donations are appreciated to cover the cost of the event. Registration is required due to limited seating. Call 662-647-0942 or stop by CARE.

4-H Livestock Show set Jan. 24
The Tallahatchie County Livestock Show will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Tallahatchie County Fairgrounds near Charleston.
The event, sponsored by the Tallahatchie County 4-H Livestock Club, is free for the public to attend. A concession stand will be available, with proceeds from concessions going to the local 4-H livestock club.
“We would love to have the community come support our youth active in this program as they practice to compete in regional and state competitions with their livestock,” said Shelbie Phelps, Tallahatchie County Agriculture and Natural Resources/4-H Extension agent.
To show an animal, entries are $25 for livestock, $10 for rabbits and a $5 showmanship fee. Late fees kick in Jan. 8. Entries will be accepted on the day of the show.
Peewee showmanship and old-timers showmanship entries are free.

Democratic committee sets meeting
The Tallahatchie County Democratic Executive Committee will hold a meeting on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the county courthouse in Charleston. The meeting begins at 10 a.m.
All current committee members are asked to attend. This is a pivotal discussion assembly as the committee gears up for the upcoming primary election on March 10. Plans for recruiting and training committed poll managers in relation to the success of this election and all future elections that TCDEC is charged with are paramount.
Individuals who have a desire to serve on the committee and wish to strengthen its impact in the area are also invited to attend this meeting. A voting age of 18 years, active voter participation, vote as a Democrat and Tallahatchie County resident, are initial requirements to serve on the Tallahatchie County Democratic Executive Committee.

Free children’s karate class offered
The Charleston Arts Center will host an after-school karate class at CARE on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The program is free for children ages 5 to 12, with classes at 3:30 and 4:30. A snack is provided.
Friday January 30
Chick-fil-A truck returns to CARE
On Friday, Jan. 30, the Chick-fil-A food truck will return to the CARE building in Charleston. The truck will be parked in front of the CARE building from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. to allow members of the community to purchase food. A portion of the proceeds from sales are donated back to CARE.

Krewe of CARE Mardi Gras event
On Saturday, Jan. 31, celebrate Carnival season at CARE with a Krewe of CARE Mardi Gras celebration featuring an evening of food, music and fun from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are $25 per couple or $15 per individual. A complimentary mask is provided with each ticket purchased. Come vote for Mardi Gras king and queen.

Daughters of Destiny meeting set
The Daughters of Destiny Women’s Fellowship invites all to their meeting Saturday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m., in the fellowship hall of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Charleston.
Mrs. Dana Floyd Spears will present a financial wellness session entitled, “Your Money, Your Mission.” With cost of most products and services steadily increasing, come and learn some money-saving tips.

Baptist association sets pageant
The 1st District of Tallahatchie County Baptist Association will present a pageant on Saturday, Feb. 7, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Charleston Elementary School gymnasium.
“Join us for this model casting event and seize the opportunity to make your mark in the world of fashion and entertainment,” noted a flyer for the event, which is open to participation for ages 4-19.
The cost is $10, and attire will be formal.

Arbor Day tree giveaway scheduled
The Tallahatchie County Soil and Water Conservation District will be giving away prepackaged Nuttall Oak saplings and Double Red Althea Shrub saplings on Friday, Feb. 13, for Arbor Day. The tree giveaway will be held in the Charleston USDA/NRCS parking lot starting at 9 a.m. and continuing until 4:30 p.m. or until the supply is exhausted. Mid-State offers youth job help
Out-of-school youth having a high school diploma or equivalent are being recruited for the Mid-State Opportunity Inc. youth employment program, MySTATUS (Maximize Your Skills to Advance to Unlimited Success).
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Out-of-School Youth MySTATUS program is funded by The Delta Workforce Development Area through South Delta Planning and Development District.
Youth ages 16-24 in Tallahatchie, Quitman, Tunica and Panola counties are offered a comprehensive training and employment program. Participants are paid $6 hourly for training and $10 hourly for work experience. Cash incentives are awarded to youth who obtain accredited certificates and credentials.

Earn school diploma in 22 weeks
The Mississippi Youth ChalleNGe Academy, located at Camp Shelby, is an alternative education program for 16- to 18-year-old male and female youth who are struggling in school or no longer attending.
With a focus on job training, social skills and self-discipline, ChalleNGe is a nonprofit high school diploma-producing academy designed to meet the needs of high school dropouts and at-risk youth. Participants may earn a high school diploma in just 22 weeks.
