On Saturday, May 16, New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery, located at 1724 New Hope Road, Scobey, MS 38953, will have their annual memorial service and business meeting followed by a potluck dinner. First responders invited to dinner
Paul Baptist Church, at 5729 Paul-Shady Grove Road, Cascilla, will host a regional first responders appreciation dinner in the church fellowship hall Saturday, May 16, from 5-7 p.m. First responders may eat in or carry out.
Invited to attend are first responders from the Cascilla, Murphreesboro, Paynes, Rosebloom and Spring Hill fire departments of southeastern Tallahatchie County; members of the Tallahatchie County Sheriff’s Department; constable; Pafford Ambulance Service; and the Charleston office of Tallahatchie Valley Electric Power Association.

Union Cemetery work day planned
A work day will be held at Union Cemetery in the Tillatoba community on Saturday, May 23, beginning at 8 a.m. Participants are asked to bring what they need to work with, including chain saws to remove a large tree from a fence. Among other planned duties are picking up trash, removing old and spent flowers and arrangements, putting ant poison on ant hills and trimming weeds and grass in areas.
Calvary Food Pantry to distribute
Calvary Food Pantry, at 36 Ward-Riddick Road, just east of Parchman off Highway 32, will distribute food from 8-9 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, for those living in the West Tallahatchie area and in Sunflower County outside the city limits of Drew (which has its own food pantry). Food pantry distribution day is the next-to-last Saturday of each month.
Faith Food Pantry to distribute
Faith Food Pantry, located at 30028 Highway 32, Charleston, will distribute food from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 23. Food pantry distribution day is on the next-to-last Saturday of each month.
Charleston Day registration event set
On Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24, the Charleston Day Building, located at 1227 Oak Grove (David Alford) Road, Charleston, will serve as the setting for a Charleston Day registration pop-up event.
Registration will be conducted from 12-4 p.m. Saturday and from 2-6 p.m. Sunday.
Anyone may take the occasion to register their attendance at this year’s Labor Day weekend Charleston Day reunion, scheduled to be hosted by the Marietta, Georgia, Charleston Day Club chapter. Secretary of that chapter is Sonya Lewis, niece of former National Charleston Day Organization president Tommy Willis.

Birdia Keglar Legacy events planned
The Birdia Keglar Legacy Committee announces the 21st annual celebration to take place on Saturday, June 6, in the Charleston area beginning at 10 a.m.
On the lawn of the Tallahatchie County Courthouse in Charleston, the celebration will bring together leaders and community representatives who stand steadfast in keeping alive the efforts of Mrs. Keglar before her untimely death on Jan. 11, 1966.
Featuring a drum call to the community, the opportunity to support longstanding activism and staying the course of action remains the highlighted mission of this yearly event.
During the morning session, an array of entertainment will be featured, including youth dance performances and instrumental and vocal renditions.
An annual cavalcade will proceed from Charleston Court Square to New Town Church, where the afternoon will feature reflections of the commitment of Mrs. Keglar and her group of pioneers who engaged fervently for enhancement of their community.
Participants in this year’s celebration will be reminded of the history of the Birdia Keglar Legacy. A voter education presentation, the awarding of the 2026 BKLegacy scholarship, entertainment, trivia, giveaways and lunch will also be a part of the day’s event.
Everyone is invited to attend and continue to connect and collaborate with recognizing the challenges that our communities face.
Souvenir T-shirts are available for purchase by May 1. Prices are $12 for youth, $25 for adults up to size 2X, and $27 for 3X and larger.
