November unemployment in Tallahatchie County held fairly steady as compared with a year ago, the Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) has announced.
Comparisons between November and October employment information cannot be made because October numbers are unavailable due to the recent federal government shutdown. A MDES spokesperson said there will be no unemployment rate data for any states or for the nation as a whole for October.
The MDES, which compiles the state’s employment data, noted that 180 members of the county’s 4,390-person labor force were jobless in November while 4,210 were employed, for an unemployment rate of 4.1%.
The labor force consists of everyone who has a job or is actively looking.
The county’s November unemployment rate was slightly higher than the 3.8% of November 2024, when 170 people were unemployed, and 4,200 employed, from a labor force of 4,370.
The Mississippi unemployment rate for November stood at 3.8%, up two-tenths of 1% from the 3.6% figure in November 2024.
National unemployment in November was at 4.6%, up from 4.2% one year ago.

One local statistic that MDES was able to provide for October and November comparison was the number of initial and continuing unemployment insurance claims, as well as the benefits paid.
In Tallahatchie County, there were 22 new claims for unemployment insurance filed in November (compared to 21 in October) and 132 continued claims (versus 104). A total of $19,104 in local benefits were paid in November and $13,890 in October.
