Tallahatchie jobless rate dips

Tallahatchie County’s unemployment rate fell from 10.8 percent in January to 9.0 percent in February, according to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.

In February, 510 people among a local civilian labor force numbering 5,670 were unemployed.

Bill includes courthouse funding

State Rep. Tommy Reynolds on Monday said a provision in Senate Bill 2906, the so-called $250 million “big bond bill,” would provide another $100,000 for continuing restoration work at the Tallahatchie County Courthouse in Sumner.

Charleston hires Milner as new city clerk

For the first time in nearly four decades, the City of Charleston has hired a new city clerk.

Three people applied for the advertised position and were interviewed March 19 by a committee comprised of Charleston Mayor Sedrick Smith, Ward 2 Commissioner Meg Miller and Ward 5 Commissioner Perry Herron.

Mayor's Charity Ball hugely successful

Kudos to the committee members and everyone else who had a hand in helping to make Saturday evening’s second annual Mayor’s Charity Ball in Charleston an outstanding community event.

A benefit for the American Cancer Society, the 2015 ball was again held in the Charleston Middle School gymnasium on Oak Grove Road.
