Josh Harrison and his band, The War Horse, with Josh, London Rosamond and Cayden Kerr, played a rock show in Fulton this weekend. I heard through the grapevine that it was great! These boys are moving on up!
Milton Harper broke his thigh bone last Wednesday morning and was carried to Grenada, then on to Oxford by ambulance. He will be going to Charleston rehab as soon as he is able.
Phillip and Susan Bell of Caledonia visited us last Wednesday afternoon. Phillip had an early doctor’s appointment in Memphis, so they were going to spend the night up there.
My great-grandson, Bradley Holliday, was excited when he came to visit Sunday afternoon about attending D-Now (Discipleship Now Weekend) with his church, Emmanuel Baptist. Five churches had their youth, grades 6-12, attend a weekend of worship and fellowship learning how to stand together in faith. Over 100 students attended this wonderful event!
Kirsti McClanahan and her daughters, Fynlee and Remington, visited her dad, Bobby Joe, and other family members recently.
Martha Box said she heard a great message at Willow Springs Assembly of God Sunday. The Word and Spirit really spoke well. She said she was so glad to see so many of her family each time she visits.
Martha said she “Did a bit of twist and shout Saturday night as I overloaded my broke arms with things from my trunk and turned ... yep, twisted, falling forward and shouting as I landed. Hard as that was, getting up had me Shouting for Superman. Guess he was tied up, so I rolled about, shouting as I pulled myself up.” As bad as her hand hurts, Martha said she is “still laughing, and still praising God” that she is up and about. Martha, that could only happen to you!
Deborah McCool said they did do something for a change. They took a few days off from work for their anniversary. On Sept. 11, they will be married for 48 years. They went to Leland Saturday evening. Saturday morning, they went to Batesville for breakfast and then just rode around for a while. At about 4 Saturday, they went to daughter Kimberly and Jason Beavers. They had a fish fry for Hannah's 19th birthday on the 5th. They went on to spend the night in Greenville, taking Alice Kellum, Tommy's sister, with them. His brother from Philadelphia came, too. Deborah said it was the first time in a while the three sisters and brother all got together.
Happy anniversary, Deborah and Tommy McCool, on the 11th! (Sorry, Deborah, there is no official traditional gift for a 48th anniversary. I guess Tommy will have to give you a gift for what he thinks you’re worth and you can give Tommy a pair of eyeglasses or a walking cane. That is, if you don’t like what he gave you.)
On Sunday, our visitors were Brad, Frankie and Bradley Holliday and Donna Garripoli, all of Grenada.
Happy birthday to David Robinson and Melissa McLendon on the 9th; to Jimmy Dukes on the 10th; to Beth Jackson Tindall, Tray Pegram and Paul Hill on the 12th; to Susan Bell and Samantha Anderson on the 13th; to Judy Goodwin Coyle and precious Margaret Jean Ross on the 14th; to my niece, Laura Torrance, on the 15th; and to Kellie Sturdivant Young on the 16th. Happy birthday to all of you!
Recipe for the week: Old Fashioned Chocolate Cobbler
Ingredients:
• 1½ cups self-rising flour
• 1½ cups granulated sugar (divided)
• 7 tablespoons dark unsweetened cocoa powder (divided)
• 3/4 cup of whole milk
• 8 tablespoons melted butter
• ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
• ½ cup brown sugar, packed
• 1½ cups very hot water
• Vanilla ice cream (optional)
Preheat oven to 350°. Grease the bottom side of an 8x8 glass baking dish with butter or shortening and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk or sift flour, 1 cup of sugar and 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract and pour batter into prepared pan. Spread to an even layer.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar, brown sugar, and remaining 4 tablespoons cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter into an even layer, being careful not to disturb the battered layer. Next, carefully pour the hot water evenly over the sugar mixture, but do not stir.
Place the pan on a cookie sheet and then place it into the oven. Bake 40 to 45 minutes. Remove from oven — the center will be a bit jiggly — and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Spoon into bowls, drizzle with the chocolate sauce from the pan and top with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
Thought for the day: The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
