My sweet neighbor, Lila Myrick, was bragging on her husband Garry, who was selected as gym member of the month for September at the James C. Kennedy Wellness Center in Charleston at TGH. He was presented with a certificate on Friday. He hasn’t missed a day since he joined. Congratulations to you, Garry! I can’t imagine me joining a gym class. The class would be over by the time I dressed myself for class!
Martha Box said this week went by so fast she had to get new running shoes! She made it through a tough week again. “Jesus is the reason I can keep on keeping on,” she said. “He strengthens me at my weakest moments!” Martha enjoyed lunch at the Corner Wednesday, then took lunch to Sheryn and visited a while. She went to the wedding of Holly and Cameron Cole Saturday evening and said it was “a loving, spiritual, beautiful wedding.” She said it was good to spend time with her Box nephews, Wayne, Dave, and Boone and their loves!
Martha enjoyed a great teaching/preaching message at Willow Springs Assembly of God Sunday morning with music and songs that lifted her up! She then met her sister, Joyce Stevens; niece, Angie; and the boys for lunch at the Catfish Hut. Afterward, “it was a nap, then play time with my little neighbor princess, Paisley,” Martha said.
The Grenada Rockets, Rowland Hartley’s team, won the Fall Grand Slam Tournament in Flowood. “I’m so proud of them,” said his grandmother, Faye Hartley.
Tommy and Debbie McCool picked up Alice Kellum in Grenada Saturday afternoon and they went to Leland. Debbie said she was very nervous about going after what happened there Friday night. Just a lot of prayers for everyone there and at the other towns involved with this horrible stuff.
Tommy McCool had two of his nieces come visit. Michelle Holemon from Texas and Tracy Thornburg of Arkansas, daughters of Tommy’s older brother, Mac, who passed away many years ago, came in last Wednesday and stayed until Sunday. His sister, Patsy Welch, had been fighting with her diabetes all week. She went to the doctor and her sugar was too high to register. Thankfully, by Sunday it was down a lot and she was feeling a little bit tired.
Caitlyn and Hannah Beavers and Dallas Boyett all went to the Mississippi Coast from Thursday until Sunday for the Cruisin’ the Coast car show. Dallas’ brother, Denver, and his parents, Daniel and Michelle Boyett, went, too. This is a yearly thing for them.
Milton Harper is still having problems with getting around, but therapy is helping him. He is finally eating since he’s home, but he has lost 15 pounds in a month. Sadie said she was doing OK. She is getting new glasses soon so she can see better.
David and I visited the great-grands, Haven Rose and Waylon Jr., Sunday afternoon for a little while. Waylon Jr. wasn’t feeling well so he went to bed. Haven Rose, as usual, was in a talking mood. She gave me a few lectures about turning my phone off and not making any more pictures of her. What would we do without our precious grandbabies?
Faye Hartley, Karen Chambers and Teresa Ross celebrate their birthdays on the 16th; Diane Hill Nail on the 17th; Carl Kendall on the 18th; Lisa McMillan and Tripp Beardain on the 19th; Mike Lancaster on the 20th; and Alicia Pittman on the 22nd. I pray you all have a wonderful day celebrating your special day.
Recipe of the week: Sausage, Potato and Cabbage Soup
Ingredients:
• 2 Tbsp. canola oil
• 1 (14-ounce) package kielbasa or other cooked sausage, sliced
• 1/2 yellow onion, chopped
• 1 large carrot, chopped
• 1/2 medium green or savoy cabbage, chopped
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 2 cloves garlic, chopped
• 6 cups chicken broth
• 2 large russet potatoes, peeled and chopped
• 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar
• 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh dill
• Crusty bread, for serving
Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add kielbasa and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned. Add onion, carrot and cabbage to pot. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened. Add garlic and cook 1 to 2 minutes. Add broth, potatoes and sausage. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are cooked through. Remove from heat. Stir in vinegar and dill. Serve with crusty bread.
Thought for the day: You may not even realize it, but you make someone’s day better just by being in it.
