WEBB — On Friday, July 7, the Dollar General location here reopened for business for the first time since a Sept. 30, 2022, fire that was subsequently ruled arson.
“We are excited to share that our Webb store located at 2060 Highway 49 East is now open to serve Tallahatchie customers,” according to a statement Tuesday from Dollar General Corporation Public Relations.
“The store will continue to serve Webb residents as a traditional Dollar General store which offers convenient and affordable access to household essentials including food, health and beauty products, home cleaning supplies, housewares, stationery, seasonal items and basic clothing,” the statement continued.
The Webb store is operating in a new building.
The original structure, which opened in April 2009, was so badly damaged by last fall’s fire that the decision was made to tear it down and rebuild from the slab up.
No arrest has been made in the Webb Dollar General arson case.
Webb Mayor Micheal Plez has said the Dollar General store in his town is not only a sales tax revenue driver for the municipality but also a major convenience for residents of the town and area.
Meanwhile, in response to an inquiry about the status of the discount store’s nearby Tutwiler location — it sustained serious damage in an April 11 fire that also has been ruled arson — DG Public Relations said plans are to reopen the business.
“At this time, we are currently finalizing our due diligence phase for a new Tutwiler store at 220 Highway 49,” the statement noted.
Company officials added that based on the current timeline, a project to restore the Tutwiler store will begin “in the coming weeks.”
The Tutwiler store opened in August 2018, when it became Dollar General’s 500th store in Mississippi.
The discount chain also operates a store on Main Street in Charleston that opened in the spring of 2001.
As of May 8, 2023, according to data from scrapehero.com, the Good-lettsville, Tennessee, chain had 19,132 store locations operating in 7,295 cities in 47 states and territories.
