A man is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault in connection with a Monday shooting death and the gun assault of another.
Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly identified the suspect as Alexander Maxson, 35, of Charleston.
He was taken into custody within hours of the midnight-hour shootings and was formally charged Monday at 6:02 p.m., noted Fly.
Maxson is being held on a bond of $850,000 set by Justice Judge Denise Washington-Lockett.
He is accused of firing the 9 mm handgun that took the life of Tekeon Brewer, 33, of 1007 Elizabeth St., Charleston.
Tallahatchie County Coroner Anthony Hawkins said Brewer was shot once in the upper torso. He was transported by private vehicle from the scene of the 12:30 a.m. shooting, near the Charleston Industrial Park water tower, to the emergency room at Tallahatchie General Hospital, where Hawkins said Brewer died at about 2 a.m.
Hawkins said Brewer’s body was transported for autopsy.
Fly said the incident that occurred on west Elizabeth Street, merely a few feet outside of the Charleston city limits, also involved a second victim.
Kendrix Thomson, 42, of Webb, sustained a non-life-threatening injury when he was shot in the arm. He, too, was transported by private vehicle to the TGH emergency room and then transferred by ambulance to Regional One Health (formerly The Med) in Memphis, the sheriff noted. Fly said Thomson was released from the hospital the following day.
Fly said officials believe both Brewer and Thomson were intended targets of the gunplay that ensued after a commotion in the street, not far from Brewer’s home.
The sheriff said a 9 mm shell casing was recovered from the scene. A 9 mm pistol, perhaps the weapon used to shoot both victims, was recovered from Maxson’s home, he added.
“We’re still developing a motive, but it’s believed some type of argument or altercation occurred before the shooting happened,” noted Fly. “We have interviewed witnesses, and the case remains under investigation.”
The sheriff said his office is being assisted by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the district attorney’s office.
