Organizers have pushed back the starting time of Saturday's Sept. 3 Charleston Day Reunion parade and revealed the headliner for a Saturday night social gathering and dance.
The parade is now scheduled to roll from the former Charleston National Guard armory starting at 11 a.m., an hour later than previously announced.
New East Tallahatchie School District Superintendent Marvell Hudson is to be the parade's grand marshal.
Alvin Johnson, president of the reunion sponsor, the National Charleston Day Organization, said anyone who wishes to enter a vehicle or march in the parade may contact Carolyn Johnson or "just show up and represent your family, class, group or just yourself."
For Saturday night's social gathering and dance, which begins at 7 p.m. and ends at midnight in the Charleston Middle School gymnasium, $ir Kindred has been announced as the special musical performer. Johnson said $ir Kindred will perform starting at 9. Tickets are $12.
In other planned events for the Sept. 2-4 reunion, Court Square will be closed to through traffic Saturday so that Charlestonians can gather for a shopping and entertainment experience.
"There will be a DJ along with some musical acts and vendors selling food, clothing, jewelry and other things," noted Johnson.
Vendor spots remain available for $50. Anyone interested in signing up is asked to contact Vanisha Powell at Charleston City Hall, he explained.
Festivities will climax with a banquet scheduled for 6 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday in the CMS gym. Superintendent Hudson will serve as master of ceremonies, Mayor Sedrick Smith will update affairs of the city and Concetta Wells will be the banquet speaker.
Johnson said Miss Vertreace Sanders, and perhaps James Howard Woods, will provide entertainment.
Joann Batteast Hoskins will be catering the meal for the $40-per-ticket banquet.
