A burn ban is in effect in the hill country of Tallahatchie County until further notice, which means there is a prohibition against all forms of outdoor burning.
On a motion by District 3 Supervisor Larry Cole and a second by District 1 Supervisor Buck Havens, the board voted unanimously Monday morning to adopt the burn ban effective in all that portion of Tallahatchie County situated east of Mississippi Highway 35. In other words, all of the hill area is covered.
"Particularly the hill area is a tinderbox and there is a severe fire danger right now," Board of Supervisors attorney Tommy Reynolds told The Sun-Sentinel in announcing the burn ban.
The board did not allow any exemptions whatsoever to the burn ban in the hills.
Even in the Delta area of the county, west of Highway 35, residents are urged to exercise extreme caution with any outdoor burning.
