The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating a Friday morning hit-and-run in Tallahatchie County that resulted in the death of a Panola County man.
Sgt. Marvin Baird identified the victim as 33-year-old Derrick Thomas of Batesville.
Baird said Mr. Thomas was walking north on Highway 35 when an unknown northbound vehicle apparently struck him.
MHP responded to the scene at about 2:46 a.m., he added.
Tallahatchie County Coroner Ginger Meriwether said the incident occurred near the Tallahatchie-Panola county line and that Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.
"My condolences, thoughts and prayers for this family," she added.
Baird did not immediately respond to an email about whether there was an eyewitness who notified authorities or if the body was discovered and reported later by another motorist.
"The crash remains under investigation," he added.
