The second annual Junetacular Summer Festival, a two-day event in observance of Juneteenth, was held in Charleston June 17-18.
The event featured a Friday, June 17, brunch and meet-and-greet, the opening of vendor booths on Main Street and a nighttime party.
On Saturday, June 18, a formal program was held. Called a "power seminar," carrying the theme, "Embracing the Power Within You," the event featured two primary guest speakers: Dr. Renee Meeks and William Wilson. Tawanda Shannon, an organizing committee member, was the emcee.
After a welcome by Mayor Sedrick Smith and prayer by the Rev. Johnnie Reed, Meeks spoke to the crowd gathered just off the western portico of the Tallahatchie County Courthouse.
The agenda included a skit by Charleston Community Center youth, musical selections by Obi Matthews and closing remarks by oarganizing committee member Cedric Terry.
A parade got underway at noon, from the former National Guard armory, westward on George Payne Cossar Boulevard and, finally, around Court Square and down the west end of Main Street.
Saturday afternoon activity revolved around the vendor booths, while a nighttime "sneaker and jeans party" was held at a local sports bar.
