An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death and, hopefully, identity of a person whose body was found last week near Glendora.
Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly said the fully-clothed body, gender unknown due to a state of decomposition, was discovered in a ditch along Black Bayou Road, off the west side of U.S. Highway 49.
Fly said deputies from the Tallahatchie and Grenada sheriff’s offices located the body shortly after 8 a.m. on Sept. 26 after they “received some information that [the body] might possibly be there.”
Fly declined to say why Grenada County lawmen were at the scene and would not confirm whether foul play was involved. He did, however, note that the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist, which usually happens only in situations where a crime has been committed or is strongly suspected.
The sheriff said Tallahatchie County Deputy Coroner Angie Peters Davis pronounced the person dead at the scene.
Cause and manner of death are pending the autopsy.
