The absentee voting period opened Tuesday, Dec. 5, for a Jan. 9 special election in Tallahatchie County Education District 7, according to county Circuit Clerk Daphane Neal.
James “Honey” Johnson, 70, and Santrail Hunt-Kuykendall, 37, both of Charleston, will be competing in the court-ordered election as a do-over of a Nov. 8, 2022, election whose results were thrown out by a special judge due to multiple irregularities.
The ED 7 race is for a position on the East Tallahatchie School District Board of Trustees. The election will be held under a new redistricting plan that the school board adopted this fall.
Neal said voting precincts involved will be Charleston 1, 2 and 3, and Spring Hill.
She added that her office has mailed out notices to all registered voters in ETSD education districts 6-10 whose voting precinct or education district has changed as a result of the redistricting.
