After three signed up recently, no more candidates have tossed qualifying hats into the ring to seek positions available in two regular and three special Tallahatchie County elections this fall, Circuit Clerk Daphane Neal said late Tuesday (Aug. 20).
The qualifying deadlines for special elections for constable in the 2nd Judicial District and a West Tallahatchie school board post in Education District 3 are just two weeks away, on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m.
The qualifying deadline for special elections for Tallahatchie County prosecuting attorney and justice court judge in the 1st Judicial District also will be Thursday, Sept. 5, at 5.
Meanwhile, the deadline to qualify to vie for regular school board elections in Education District 4 and Education District 9, seats on the West and East Tallahatchie school boards, respectively, is one day later — on Friday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m.
There is no qualifying fee, but a Qualifying Statement of Intent and a petition bearing the signatures of a specific number of registered voters living within the boundaries of the office being sought are required. Fifty signatures are mandated for all of the petitions except that for the justice judge seat, which requires only 15 signatures.
Properly formatted petition forms are available from the circuit clerk’s offices in Charleston (662-647-8758) and Sumner (662-375-8515).
