WEBB — The West Tallahatchie High School Choctaws are 2-0 at the start of back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2015-2016 campaigns.
West Tally improved to 2-0 last week after scoring a 28-18 victory over the West Bolivar Eagles at Rosedale.
The Choctaws could have finished the game with 60-plus points had four touchdowns not been nullified by penalty flags.
Three of those would-be scores — a 70-yard punt return, a 30-yard run and a pass reception — were made by Jamerrius Johnson. One was a rushing touchdown by quarterback Kordell Robinson.
Despite the yellow laundry thrown by officials, West Tally head coach Shane Hargett said he is “proud of the kids” for their performance in the game.
“Our goal is to get better every week,” he noted. “I think we’ve accomplished that. We’re better this week than we were last week. We are a young team, and, hopefully, we can keep getting better with every game we have under our belt.”
West Bolivar drew first blood in the opening period to take a 6-0 lead. West Tally scored in the second quarter on a 20-yard pass from Kordell Robinson to his brother, Kelvin Robinson.
The score was knotted at 6 all at halftime.
In the second half, Kordell Robinson scored on a 35-yard run and Kelvin Robinson hit paydirt on a run and a 91-yard interception return for a pick-six. Kelvin Robinson ran for a two-point conversion and Johnson caught a pass for another.
On the stat sheet, Kelvin Robinson rushed 11 times for 105 yards, Johnson had 10 carries for 88 yards and Kordell Robinson ran six times for 65 yards.
Kelvin Robinson had the only pass reception of the day, and his brother completed only 1-of-2 pass attempts.
“We really didn’t have to throw the ball,” said Hargett.
Defensively, the Choctaws were led by senior Corderrius Madden, who had six tackles and two sacks; senior Isaiah Hill, with five solo stops; Cameron Christian, with four tackles; Kelvin Robinson, with three takedowns; Ledesmond Thomas, with three tackles, including two for a loss, and one sack; Althavion Hoskins and Demarrion Boyd, both of whom had two stops apiece; and Trevarius Madden, who recorded one tackle and one sack.
This week, the Choctaws play host to Edwards High School of Ruleville.
Hargett described Edwards as “a big, physical team” with “a lot of good athletes,” including a talented new running back and a big quarterback who likes to run the ball.
“They’re going to be the best team we’ve faced thus far,” he noted. “We’re just going to get ready to play and give them all we’ve got.”
Hargett said he would like to see a large crowd of fans at Choctaw Stadium, urging the public to “come support us.”
