The National Weather Service (NWS) in Memphis has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Tallahatchie County and environs, effective from 6 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Saturday, with the possibility of heavy mixed precipitation leading to accumulations of between 2 and 4 inches of snow and a light glaze of ice.
Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous, according to NWS. "Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning and evening commutes."
NWS asks for those in the warning area to delay travel if possible, adding, "If travel is necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order."
Rain and a wintry mix are expected to move into the area late Thursday night, mainly after midnight. The chance of precipitation is 80%, and Thursday night's low will be about 30.
On Friday, when the early high is expected to reach 34 degrees before falling, there is a 90% chance of snow or rain, and NWS predicts the snow "could be heavy at times."
On Friday night, there is a 20% chance of snow before midnight, with the low dipping to 22, according to NWS.
Mostly sunny skies return on Saturday and Sunday, with a high Saturday near 34, a low Saturday night of 21 and a high Sunday near 40.
